Requirement for online stores to offer a statutory withdrawal function in June 2026

From 19 June 2026, online stores must provide consumers with a clear, easy-to-find and easy-to-use withdrawal function. The obligation applies to goods and services contracts concluded via an online interface. With this function, a consumer can withdraw from a contract concluded on a website or in an app, for example.

The withdrawal function must enable the consumer to withdraw directly where the contract was concluded. The aim is to make withdrawing as effortless as entering into the contract.

The new function does not replace existing ways of withdrawing from a contract; consumers can still withdraw, for example, by using a form or by e‑mail.

The withdrawal function must be prominently displayed in the online interface, and its designation must be clear and easy to read. It must be available for the whole withdrawal period. Through it, the consumer must be able to provide the information necessary to withdraw from the contract and confirm that the withdrawal notice is being sent. When a consumer uses the withdrawal function, the trader must, without undue delay, send the consumer a confirmation (for example by e‑mail) showing the content of the withdrawal and the time the withdrawal notice was submitted.

The reform is based on EU consumer rights rules.
