Sterling Airlines bankruptcy – Instructions for passengers

Sterling Airlines has filed for bankruptcy due to financial difficulties. The question concerning whether consumers can obtain a refund on flight tickets purchased depends on where the tickets have been obtained and how they have been paid.

  • If the flight tickets have been purchased with a credit card, the consumer should turn to his/her credit card company and request a refund.
  • If the tickets have been obtained on Sterling Airlines’ website and have been paid directly to Sterling, a refund is not possible.
  • If the consumer has reserved flight tickets from Sterling, but the flight is performed by Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA, s/he should contact Norwegian (tel. +47 21490015).
  • If the consumer has ordered the flight tickets via a travel agency or organizer, s/he should discuss the matter with them first.

If Sterling’s client is already at the flight destination or has rented a car through Sterling’s business partner, s/he may stay at the hotel and use the vehicle during the period originally agreed. These customers must, however, order a return flight from some other airline.

If the client has ordered the journey via a travel agency or organizer, s/he can discuss refund for the new return flight with them. Clients should also ensure that their travel insurance covers airline bankruptcies.
