When speaking on the occasion of the World Consumer Rights Day Markos Kyprianou, Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection, stressed the important role that consumers have in securing the welfare of the entire Europe. He said that the 450 million European consumers play a key role when it comes to stimulating economic growth and creating new jobs. The favourable development is, however, to some extent hampered by lack of consumer confidence in cross-border transactions. That is why the Commission intends to spend more money on education and on informing consumers about their rights. In addition, the Commission is about to review a great deal of EU consumer protection legislation to make it more consistent.
Mr. Kyprianou also reminded citizens of the network of European Consumer Centres. The network promotes and develops consumer protection in cross-border commerce within the EU. At the moment the network has consumer centres in 24 countries across Europe.
